A Day in the Life of Me: Wednesday

I made it a point to wake up early for coffee and Bible time this morning...what a big difference that has been making for me! I am sooo not a morning person, but having those few minutes of quiet to "wake up with Jesus" is just wonderful.

When the children woke up, we had some yummy pumpkin bread with strawberry kefir smoothies for breakfast and then jumped into our kitchen duties and morning chores. I started some sweet tea for kombucha and set it to cool....

After it had cooled, I pulled my current batch of kombucha down out of my brewing cupboard...

Here's a close up of one of my current scoby's...

And here's a group shot :) You can see my scoby's in their new homes, the new batch of kombucha that is now ready to drink and my extra scoby's and their starter tea that went into the fridge for safe keeping...

Next, I made dinner. We have our largest meal of the day in the middle of the day. My husband works second shift and it's important to me that we sit down together and eat as a family. I made a turkey casserole with fresh veggies from the garden...it was delicious! Then I started some chicken cooking in the crock pot that will go towards our dinners for the next 2 days.

After getting the kitchen cleaned up from dinner, the next thing on my to-do list was to take out, scrub and re-season all of my cast iron. Cast iron cookware is one of the best investments a homesteader or homemaker can make. They only get better with age! (More on cast iron in another post :) Here is a picture of the pieces I worked on today...

I have 2 more of the muffin pans....they were flea-market rescues and are at work with my husband right now (hopefully to be sand blasted :)

And here are 2 of my supervisors...

Adam ended up sleeping until it was almost supper time. The girls worked on some math work and then played quietly in the schoolroom while I finished the cast iron. For supper, I made toasted cheese sandwiches, some raw veggies cut up, and some fresh 'bucha (my kids nickname for kombucha :) to drink. Then I took the chicken from the crock pot, removed all of the meat and put what was left back into the crockpot to cook overnight. I added a splash of vinegar, and some herbs and spices to make a rich, healthy chicken stock.

The kids helped to tidy the kitchen for the evening and then we went into the living room to relax. We had fun being silly and playing games until around 8pm. Then I got everyone cleaned up and ready for bed and tucked them in...Then the phone rang. My hubby is getting held-over at work...again. He won't be home until after 3am.

I have to remind myself that this is a blessing...I sure do miss my husband, but I need to be supportive and not naggy at him.

And now, I'm typing away on this lovely blog...while a basket of clean laundry is calling my name...just waiting for me to fold it and put it away :P
